Mail Services

DNS Made Easy offers a variety of electronic mail services such as:

SMTP Authentication

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving e-mail. DNS Made Easy's SMTP service provides a secure relay for sending outgoing email using SMTP Authentication.

DNS Made Easy enterprise email servers will act as a secure relay for your email messages using SMTP authentication. Many ISP's today block outgoing port 25 as a spam mitigation precaution. This is preventing many legitimate clients from sending email from their own domain names. SMTP service from DNS Made Easy will allow you to specify an alternate port for your going email relay through our server.

How It Works

DNS Made Easy's SMTP Service allows you to configure an account username and password so you can authenticate to our SMTP servers, after authentication you can send up to your allotted quota in email as a user from your own domain(s) and from any email account you wish. Your email client or server will need to be configured to use our outgoing SMTP server with the authentication credentials you have created.

NOTE: DNS Made Easy DNS service for your domain is required to use our SMTP services. We require all users to first create an account, configure DNS service, then call our offices to subscribe to the SMTP service for verification.

You can configure your email client or server to send all authenticated SMTP traffic to any of the following ports:

  • SSL or non-SSL: 21, 25, 5521, 5525, 7721, 7725, 2525
  • SSL only: 465,555

Backup Mail

DNS Made Easy's back-up email service provides access to three (3) additional enterprise email server clusters for complete email redundancy.

If your mail server cannot be reached, then your email is sent to DNS Made Easy's Enterprise Back-up email servers. Once it reaches our servers, it remains in queue and we continually reattempt delivery of the mail to your primary mail server. When your primary server is back online, the queued mail is instantly delivered to your mail server. DNS Made Easy will keep attempting to deliver mail to your server for 14 days or until it responds.

NOTE: DNS Made Easy DNS service for your domain is not required to use our backup mail services. You can add the appropriate MX records for your domain on any system.

How It Works

When an email is sent to a recipient the email server looks to see which server handles mail for the domain using the DNS MX records. MX records specify which server(s) will receive mail for a given domain. Each MX record is given a priority (the MX level), the lowest number being the primary mail server. The primary mail server is responsible for delivering the mail to the appropriate user mailbox.

Mail delivery is first attempted to the primary mail server (indicated by the MX record with the lowest MX priority number). If that server is not reachable, then delivery is attempted to the mail server with the second lowest MX priority number. If the second lowest mail server in priority is unreachable, then the mail will be delivered to the server with the third lowest MX priority, etc

How to Set Up Backup Mail

Configuration consists of adding your domain into the DNS Made Easy web interface, as well as adding the additional MX records provided to your domains DNS records. If your domain uses DNS Made Easy DNS service, this can be done automatically.

Disclaimer

The DNS Made Easy back-up email service is not an anti-spam service. However, we do perform simple email checking to help prevent spammers from using our emails servers as an open relay to your mail servers.

Verify the server sending the email has correct reverse DNS configured.

Check to make sure the "from" mail address is valid.

Check to make sure the email headers are properly formatted.

Utilize Greylisting*

Utilize the Spamhaus RBL as well as an internal RBL

* Greylisting is a simple method of defending electronic mail users against e-mail spam. It is the best way of blocking most spam without using content filters, which can cause false positives. In short, a mail transfer agent that uses greylisting will "temporarily reject" (a 450 error code) any email from a sender it does not recognize. If the mail is legitimate, the originating server will try again to send it later usually within a few minutes, at which time the destination will accept it. If the mail is from a spammer, it will not be retried so the spam will not be relayed through our systems and on to your mail server.

Mail Forwarding

Mail Server Forwarding is used to forward all incoming email for a domain to a destination email server on a specified port.

The destination mail server (an MTA, mail transfer agent), must have the ability to accept email for that domain. DNS Made Easy's enterprise email servers will route the incoming email for that domain forward to the destination email server. This service is extremely popular for people that want to accept mail on a port other than port 25. Mail Server Forwarding service also includes free Backup Email Service.

How to Configure Mail Server Forwarding

To configure MSF, add your domain within the DNS Made Easy control panel as well as the mail server host name and port you would like your email delivered to on the destination server. You can then change your MX records to use DNS Made Easy's mail server forwarding servers and you are ready to accept mail on your system. This service will also work with dynamic IP's using the DNS Made Easy Dynamic DNS solution. NOTE: DNS Made Easy DNS Service is not required to use our Mail Server Forwarding Services. You can add the appropriate MX records for your domain on any system.
