SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving e-mail. DNS Made Easy's SMTP service provides a secure relay for sending outgoing email using SMTP Authentication.
DNS Made Easy enterprise email servers will act as a secure relay for your email messages using SMTP authentication.
Since 2003, the SMTP Authentication service has been trusted by thousands of business to send millions of emails per day.
The SMTP Authentication service is used for many reasons. The two most popular reasons are:
1- The road-warriors: Users that need to send email anywhere from the road and are unable to connect to their normal email server to send outgoing email.
2 - Users that are unable to send email out of port 25 due to firewalls: Many ISPs today block outgoing port 25 as a spam mitigation precaution. This is preventing many legitimate clients from sending email from their own domain names. SMTP service from DNS Made Easy will allow you to specify an alternate port for your outgoing email relay.
DNS Made Easy's SMTP service allows you to configure an account username and password so you can authenticate to our SMTP servers. After authentication, you can send email as a user from your own domain(s) and from any email account you wish (up to your allotted quota). Your email client or server will need to be configured to use our outgoing SMTP server with the authentication credentials you have created.
NOTE: Due to abuse, your organization's domains must use DNS Made Easy DNS service for your primary domain. We require all users to first create an account, configure DNS service, then contact us to subscribe to the SMTP service for verification.
You can configure your email client or server to send all authenticated SMTP traffic to any of the following ports:
✔ SSL or non-SSL: 21, 25, 5521, 5525, 7721, 7725, 2525
✔ SSL only: 465,555

DNS Made Easy's backup email service provides access to three additional enterprise email server clusters for complete email redundancy.
If your mail server cannot be reached, then your email is sent to DNS Made Easy's Enterprise Backup email servers. Once it reaches our servers, it remains in queue and we continually reattempt delivery of the mail to your primary mail server. When your primary server is back online, the queued mail is instantly delivered.
DNS Made Easy will keep attempting to deliver mail to your server until it responds, for up to 14 days.
NOTE: DNS Made Easy's DNS service is not required to use our backup mail services. You can add the appropriate MX records for your domain on any normal DNS system.
When an email is sent to a recipient, the email server looks to see which server handles mail for the domain using the DNS MX records. MX records specify which server(s) will receive mail for a given domain. Each MX record is given a priority (the MX level), the lowest number being the primary mail server. The primary mail server is responsible for delivering the mail to the appropriate user mailbox.
Mail delivery is first attempted to the primary mail server (indicated by the MX record with the lowest MX priority number). If that server is not reachable, then delivery is attempted to the mail server with the second lowest MX priority number. If the second lowest mail server in priority is unreachable, then the mail will be delivered to the server with the third lowest MX priority, etc
Configuration consists of adding your domain into the DNS Made Easy web interface, as well as adding the additional MX records provided to your domain's DNS records. If your domain uses DNS Made Easy's DNS service, this can be done for you automatically when provisioning your backup email domain.
Disclaimer
The DNS Made Easy backup email service is not an anti-spam service. However, we do perform simple email checking to help prevent spammers from using our email servers as an open relay to your mail servers. Verify the server sending the email has correct reverse DNS configured.
✔ Check to make sure the "from" mail address is valid.
✔ Check to make sure the email headers are properly formatted.
✔ Utilize Greylisting*
✔ Utilize RBLs to eliminate known spam sources.
* Greylisting is a simple method of defending electronic mail users against email spam. It is the best way of blocking most spam without using content filters, which can cause false positives. In short, a mail transfer agent that uses greylisting will "temporarily reject" (a 450 error code) any email from a sender it does not recognize. If the mail is legitimate, the originating server will try to send it later (usually within a few minutes), at which time, the destination will accept it. If the mail is from a spammer, it will not be retried. This prevents the spam from being relayed through our systems and on to your mail server.

Mail Server Forwarding (MSF) is used as a SMTP relay gateway to forward all incoming email for a domain to a destination email server on a specified port.
The destination mail server or Mail Transfer Agent (MTA), must have the ability to accept email for that domain.
If you either are unable to accept mail on port 25 due to ISP firewalls or you do not want your mail server publicly accessible, this mail relay service is perfect for you.
DNS Made Easy's enterprise email servers will route the incoming email for that domain forward to the destination email server. Mail Server Forwarding service also includes free Backup Email Service.
The DNS Made Easy Mail Forwarding service will accept email on your domain on port 25, queue this email, and forward to your email server on whatever port you prefer.
To configure MSF, add your domain within the DNS Made Easy control panel as well as the mail server host name and port you would like your email delivered to on the destination server. You can then change your MX records to use DNS Made Easy's mail server forwarding servers, and are ready to accept mail on your system.
This service will also work with dynamic IPs using the DNS Made Easy Dynamic DNS solution.
NOTE: DNS Made Easy's DNS service is not required to use our mail server forwarding services. You can add the appropriate MX records for your domain on any DNS system.
